EgyptAir’s Rich History and Operations
As Africa’s first airline and one of the oldest carriers in the world, EgyptAir has been featured multiple times in the Skytrax Top 100 throughout the years, including in 2011, 2012, and 2022.
Founded in 1932 in Cairo as Misr Airwork, a joint venture between Banque Misr (85%) and the UK’s Airwork Limited, the airline later became known as Misrair. Following several mergers and name changes influenced by political shifts, EgyptAir was officially established in 1971 after splitting from United Arab Airlines.
Today, the carrier operates a fleet of over 70 aircraft, connecting passengers to major destinations worldwide. Since 2008, it has been a proud member of Star Alliance, the world’s first and largest global airline alliance.
Passenger Growth and Future Outlook
EgyptAir continues to demonstrate steady growth. In the first quarter of the 2023/2024 fiscal year, the airline carried 2.8 million passengers and operated over 10,000 flights, underscoring its role as a key player in African aviation.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s aviation sector as a whole recorded 47 million passengers and 365,000 flights in 2023, highlighting its growing importance as a regional hub.
EgyptAir’s steady rise in the Skytrax 2024 rankings signals its commitment to improving service quality, expanding operations, and enhancing passenger experience. With its proud history, expanding fleet, and renewed focus on innovation, the national flag carrier is well-positioned to continue shaping the future of African aviation.
